The first president of the union in 1906 was Mary Macarthur - an indefatigable fighter for pay and conditions for women. Her struggles included the Women Chainmakers in Cradley, Birmingham, the Dundee jute workers, Bridport networkers, Kidderminster carpet girls and many more. Amalgamated with the National Union of General Workers in 1920 when they opened their membership to women.
